This issue was sent into the Vehicle Committee to consider allowing for the low air warning device to be checked before or during the Tractor Protection System test. In many cases, the Tractor Protection System test will reduce the air pressure to a level that will activate the low air warning device. Doing the inspection procedure exactly how it is laid out in the procedure would suggest that once the TPS test is completed, the engine must be started up and then the air pressure built back up and then the air depleted again to inspect the low air warning device. If the low air warning device can be inspected at the same time as the TPS system it would save the air pressure from having to be built back up and then brought back down again.

The discussion in the committee was that most inspectors will do that anyway and considering it does not change anything significantly in the procedure, the committee had no issue with inspectors choosing to do the tests as outlined in the procedure or modifying it slightly as indicated in the request. However, the committee members did not feel that a change or modification to the procedure was required for this to be an accepted practice. No action was taken by the committee.
