He recibido varias consultas recientemente sobre mangueras termoplásticas. Los criterios OOS actuales para mangueras y tubos de freno contienen una nota que indica lo siguiente: El tubo de nailon termoplástico puede presentar refuerzo trenzado o diferencias de color entre la cubierta y el tubo interior. La exposición del segundo color constituye una condición que fuera de servicio.

Justificación o necesidad

Existen dos tipos de mangueras de plástico. Algunas tienen una capa exterior gruesa (del color de la manguera), seguida de una capa trenzada y, finalmente, una segunda capa de color blanquecino. Sin embargo, también hay mangueras con una capa muy fina del color exterior, seguida de una capa de plástico blanco, una trenza y, por último, una capa interior de color blanquecino. Según los criterios actuales de retirada de servicio, estas dos mangueras se retiran en etapas de desgaste completamente diferentes.

Solicitud de acción

Reevaluar los criterios OOS y analizar las diferentes construcciones de líneas termoplásticas y determinar si puede ser necesario actualizar el lenguaje en el OOSC para reflejar los diferentes tipos de aerolíneas.

Medidas adoptadas por el comité

Several different samples of air lines that were worn to different wear limits were shown yet all of them met the current OOS language for thermoplastic lines. The current OOS says that these lines must be worn to the 2nd color. The older hoses have a heavier, thicker outside color with a fabric layer with a 2nd color under the fabric layer. The newer hoses have a much thinner outer color with a white color immediately underneath with a fabric layer under that and another color under that. The first air line would have to wear through the fabric layer to get to the 2nd color, the other air line only has to wear through a thin outside layer and it is to a 2nd color before the fabric layer.

There were other lines shown that have no 2nd color at all and are the same color through to the centre. The question was if the criteria should be re-examined and a better wording developed outlining the new types of brake lines.

Although most of the committee agreed that there is a variance of wear and there may be room for improvement, no one could come up with an amendment that would be appropriate for all the types of air lines. The criteria has to be adequate for all types of plastic lines because once the lines are mounted on the vehicle, the inspector will not be able determine the internal aspect of the line. The brake manufacturers have agreed to review the current OOS and will see if they can come up with something to suggest to the committee. At this time, there was no action taken from the Vehicle Committee and with no motions on the table, the committee decided to close this issue until more information is received.
