It was discussed that some inspectors find the math when dealing with 1/8 of an inch difficult and they make inaccurate decisions. Also, for those using metric it becomes difficult when dealing with parts of a millimeter. To illustrate the metric problem, it was pointed out that in some cases it has to be calculated down to thousands of millimeters. Adding the half and full brake defect to the reference charts would make training much easier and might prevent miscalculation at roadside.

It was further discussed that thousandths of a millimeter are impossible to measure so the measurements would be better if they were rounded up to the nearest tenth of a millimeter. Discussion in the committee from several Part B instructors indicated this would be a valuable tool during training and on roadside.

The committee unanimously voted to amend the Brake Charts in the OOSC by adding tables for each type of brake and rounding the metric brake measurements down to a tenth of a millimeter.

NOTE: The Executive Committee approved the amendment as written.
