The committee discussed the request in relation to an output shaft that is loose in the steering gear box. Clarification was being sought as to why \"Any\" looseness of the pitman arm to the output shaft is OOS and "Any" looseness of the yoke to gear input shaft is OOS, but no mention of any looseness of the output shaft within the gear box.

An email from Kenworth was discussed and it was outlined in that document that a loose shaft would result in loss of power steering fluid and a significant loss would cause a loss of the power assist function. The TRW maintenance manual says to correct this situation, however, this is a maintenance standard. There was no support that this condition is an imminent hazard. It was also brought up that in previous Vehicle Committee discussions, it was mentioned that the way the gear box is designed the output shaft is unable to separate from the gear box. This condition, if excessive, could eventually cause excessive steering wheel lash or if loss of power steering fluid a condition that ?interferes with free movement of any steering component. These conditions are already covered in the OOSC, so no action was taken by the committee.
