Today, in the first step of a two-step process, the U.S. Senate advanced a package of more than 100 executive branch nominees, including presidential appointee Derek D. Barrs to serve as administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

“The Alliance looks forward to Mr. Barrs’ confirmation as FMCSA administrator,” said Collin Mooney, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). “CVSA’s leadership will work with Mr. Barrs to improve commercial motor vehicle safety and enforcement through guidance, education and advocacy for enforcement and industry across North America.”

Prior to his nomination to serve as FMCSA administrator, Barrs was an active member of CVSA, serving as the Florida Highway Patrol’s lead agency representative within the Alliance and chair of CVSA’s Enforcement and Industry Modernization Committee. After retiring from law enforcement, Barrs continued to serve in CVSA leadership as vice president then president of its associate (industry) members.

“CVSA and FMCSA maintain a strong collaborative relationship built on the strength and importance of enforcing, standardizing and improving commercial motor vehicle safety,” said Mooney. “State and federal government officials, the transportation safety law enforcement community, professional drivers and motor carriers will continue to work together to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.”

Once confirmed as FMCSA administrator, Barrs will lead more than 1,000 safety-focused individuals who are committed to improving commercial motor vehicle safety through regulation, education, enforcement, research and technology.
