| Mesures prises par le comité | It was determined that before the committee petitions FMCSA that a comparison chart be developed outlining all the inconsistencies. The chart will be completed for the meeting in the spring and then they would like the committee to have a discussion about the direction we would like to go with the results of the study. Some work on this issue was completed and reported on at previous meetings. Rolf VanderZwaag reported that the task of comparing Appendix G criteria with the OOSC was becoming pointless as it served to validate the use of Appendix G for periodic inspections when the general feeling of CVSA members seemed to be that it is not adequate for that purpose. The Vehicle Committee was asked instead to consider supporting an effort whereby CVSA would develop a periodic inspection standard that would be consistent with FMCSR 393, and the Canadian National Safety Code Standard for periodic inspections. The committee was told that the ways CVSA might approach such an initiative have not yet been proposed, but members were asked to express their views about this initiative. Members were asked to give feedback as to whether they felt that this would be a valid undertaking for CVSA. It was decided that although the committee agreed that the original issue regarding the ball and socket joint was an issue, the underlying issue of all the inconsistencies is a greater issue, and that petitioning the agency on this one issue would be of no value. Appendix G outlines the play in the ball and socket joint but is silent on how to inspect it. It was commented that if a pry bar is used, ª? play will most likely be achieved on a ball and socket joint that moves 1/8? by hand pressure. This allows inspectors to justify the difference between Appendix G and the OOS criteria because CVSA inspections of ball and socket joints are not conducted with the use of pry bars, but rather hand pressure. The committee agreed to close off this issue with this information. |
