| Mesures prises par le comité | The Vehicle Committee agreed on the following advisory that will be a printed on the ASPEN report when a brake adjustment violation is found on a vehicle which is required to be equipped with a self-adjusting brake system. ADVISORY: This vehicle has been identified to have brake adjustment violations. 49 CFR Section 393.53 requires that a self-adjusting brake system be equipped on this vehicle. A qualified service technician needs to determine why the defective brake has excessive stroke and make the appropriate repairs. Simply re-adjusting a self-adjusting brake adjuster, or replacing it, does not guarantee that the problem is corrected. The problem may exist in the foundation brake system. By certifying this inspection report you have indicated that this vehicle now has a properly functioning self-adjusting brake adjustment system. The Vehicle Committee also discussed the proper method for noting violations involving self-adjusting brake systems, i.e, a self-adjusting brake adjuster has excessive stroke, is a violation of 393.47(e) only, 393.53 only, or both. The Vehicle Committee approved the following recommendation: When a vehicle required to be equipped with a self-adjusting brake system is found to have a brake with excessive stroke, a violation of 393.53 shall be noted on the inspection report in addition to any 393.47(e) violation(s). This will only be noted as a single violation of 393.53 per vehicle/unit whether one or more brakes are found to have excessive stroke. This advises the carrier of the 393.53 violation and that they are accountable for the repairs. The advisory box noted above will appear on the ASPEN report also. |
