| Mesures prises par le comité | Both vehicle designs and the North American Standard Out of Service Criteria have changed since Appendix G's adoption in 1988. This is another example of where Appendix G is no longer current. Also, Appendix G is a standard for use in a shop while OOS inspections are conducted at the roadside. Initially the OOS criteria allowed 1/4 inch of ball and socket joint play and a pry bar could be used to check for this condition. A problem developed when inspectors with large pry bars used too much force to conduct the inspection. To correct this predicament, the OOS criterion was lowered to 1/8 inch with the stipulation that only hand pressure can be used to make the inspection. The committee agreed that FMCSA should be asked to provide information relating to the relationship between the ball and socket joint requirements stated in the OOS criteria and Appendix G. Because this is a reoccuring issue, the Committee suggested that FMCSA be sent a letter covering it in general and also letters dealing with the specific matters. This was seen as a possible way to get a speedy answer relating to the specifics and an additional response covering the complete issue. |
