Las imágenes adjuntas muestran un soporte secundario fijado al eje que, aparentemente, sostiene el árbol de levas. Con frecuencia, los pernos en U que se insertan en los soportes se encuentran sueltos o presentan grietas en la soldadura donde el soporte se une al eje.

Medidas adoptadas por el comité

A presentation regarding this issue request was done. It was explained that some inspectors are referring to the brackets as cam shaft support brackets. The bracket does go around the cam shaft tube or the cam shaft, so the brake manufacturers were asked if this should be included in the 20% brake criteria and treated as a cam shaft support bracket or was there other terminology that should be added. These brackets are often found loose or cracked at the weld connecting it to the axle. There had been several emails back and forth between the brake manufacturers and the chairman prior to the meeting. These were shown and included in the attachment package for the meeting.

Information presented outlined that the purpose of this bracket is to provide localized reinforcement to the cam tube assembly. The location and design varies based on brake design and application. These brackets can be steel plate pieces that are welded between cam tube, wing brackets or mounting plates. They can be 1 or more pieces added to the assembly. The position is based on overall brake dynamic conditions and can be special clamps (existing exhaust u-bolt bracket or special designs) that are then anchored between the brake and other vehicle components.

It was concluded that these should be considered a maintenance issue only. These are not the primary support of the cam shaft, but rather a secondary support. They are not required to assist with normal braking action and another brake component would have to fail (already covered in the criteria) before braking action was affected.

Based on the information provided by the brake manufacturers, it was determined that these are not part of the 20% criteria and should not be added, therefore no action was taken and the issue was closed.
