Target Audience

The target audience is state/provincial agency Level VI CVSA-certified inspectors (Class I Members).

Operational Policy

CVSA’s Operational Policy 4 – Inspector Training and Certification specifies that a Level VI CVSA-certified inspector must successfully complete eight hours of the Level VI refresher training within 24 months of completing his/her Basic Level VI Training Course or the inspector’s last Level VI refresher training. Refresher training is conducted by the person who successfully completed the Level VI Train the Trainer Course every two years. If an inspector/officer does not complete the above requirement, his/her certification will be suspended and in order to become re-certified, the inspector will have to successfully complete the Basic Level VI Training Course. As specified in CVSA Operational Policy 6 – Inspector Certification, each U.S. state or Canadian province Level VI refresher trainer must attend the Level VI Train the Trainer Course every two years.


The prerequisites for the Level VI Train the Trainer Course are certification in North American Standard Level I and General Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Inspection and successful completion of an approved instructor development course.


Jurisdictions are responsible for their staff’s travel, hotel accommodations and per diem. CVSA will provide training materials.

Course Schedule

  • Monday, Feb. 25 – Travel day
  • Tuesday, Feb. 26 – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. – Student pre-test and national instructor presentation; students’ modular assignments given
  • Wednesday, Feb. 27 – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. – Student instruction
  • Thursday, Feb. 28 – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. – Student instruction and subject matter test
  • Friday, March 1 – Travel day

What to Expect

All training materials will be provided, including student work books, the Level VI Out of Service Criteria and CVSA Level VI modular training program. During the course, the students will be required to provide training from an assigned Level VI training module to fellow students and the Level VI national instructor team and program director. Students will also be given a subject matter knowledge test. Train the Trainer instructor skills and subject matter knowledge will be evaluated.
