Issue Name | OOSC, Part II, Item 9, Lighting Devices (Headlamps) - LED Headlamps |
Summary of Issue | LED headlights are unregulated and create dangerous, blinding glare. A video explanation of why LED headlights are unregulated is here: https://youtu.be/CA1gfqOmdY4 |
Justification or Need | NHTSA FMVSS-108 was written in 1966 and is only applicable for point sources of light such as incandescent or tungsten coil. NHTSA has no standards for surface sources of light such as LEDs and lasers. Therefore, all LED headlights are unregulated and illegal. |
Request for Action | Develop an inspection system to eliminate the dangerous and illegal LED headlights and work with the FMCSA to ensure that headlight inspections are part of the inspection process and tracked at the FMCSA. |
Action Taken by Committee | A representative from Peterson Mfg. (lighting manufacturer) provided some clarity, specifically that all their LED lights are tested to the FMVSS-108 standard and are FMVSS-108 certified. It was determined that this Action Item is outside the scope of CVSA Vehicle Committee. The item was CLOSED with no action taken. |
