| Issue Name | OOSC, Part II, Item 3. Coupling Devices, g. Hitch Systems - Ball Hitch Safety Pin |
| Summary of Issue | Demco trailer hitch manufacturers claim that there is no need for a locking pin for their trailers and it is even marked on the hitch itself. Below is a link to their website, if you watch the videos, it explains how they work and why they do not need a locking pin. They even have them on gooseneck trailers. https://www.demco-products.com/trailer-components/couplers Trailer Couplers Maintenance free with no grease or adjustments needed, our EZ Latch couplers are available in a variety of styles and weight ratings to perfectly match your towing need. From channel and tube mounts to A-frame couplers, virtually any load can be secured with a Demco EZ Latch. And with our automatic locking mechanism, you can be sure that your load is locked and safe the very first time you use it -- and it won't let you down as you use it over and over. Here's how the Demco EZ Latch works. Step 2: As you lower the coupler, the EZ Latch will automatically open and accept the hitch ball into the coupler socket. Step 3: Once you've fully lowered the trailer, the EZ Latch will automatically latch and lock on the hitch ball – no other action needed! At this point you have a secure and safe connection between your trailer and vehicle, and it's safe to start towing! |
| Justification or Need | Demco trailer hitch manufacturers claim that there is no need for a locking pin for their trailers and it is even marked on the hitch itself. Have the vehicle committee provide guidance to inspectors on what to take as far as enforcement action if any if when they run across this. Maybe an inspection bulletin. |
| Request for Action | Have the vehicle committee provide guidance to inspectors on what action to take as far as enforcement action if any if when they run across this. Maybe an inspection bulletin. At the end of the day please let inspectors know if according to the regs we are going to enforce the locking pin on these coupling devices or if these style of couplers will be exempt. |
| Action Taken by Committee | The general consensus was that this was a non-issue. It was mentioned that the OEM does not require the safety pin and the SAE J684 was also checked and there is no mention of requiring the safety pin. No action taken. |
