On March 30, 2021, CVSA submitted an updated petition to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requesting changes to Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. The petition asks the agency to create specific regulations for regularly observed conditions of vehicle components that present an imminent hazard and are currently recorded as violations under 396.3(a)(1). The creation of specific violations for these common defects would improve data quality and provide the motor carrier industry with more specific information to improve fleet maintenance. The newly submitted petition replaces an earlier version of the petition that was originally submitted on Dec. 11, 2015, which contained information that had changed since it was originally submitted.
