    This session will welcome attendees to the symposium and begin the program with some background about what we know and what we would like to know from available information systems, including truck crash data, inspection data, maintenance records and other datasets.

  • Brake Regulations 101

    This plenary session will provide an overview of how manufacturing standards, motor carrier regulations, North American Standard Inspection Procedures and the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria all function to help ensure safe and reliable brake system performance. Study Group Assignments – Attendees will be in a study group, all of which will rotate though the same sessions, as described in the schedule below.

    This session will include discussions on the basics of the state-of-the-art in S-cam drum, hydraulic and air disc foundation brakes as well as technologies that integrate with those, including antilock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and other related technologies.
  • Study Group B – S-cam Drum Brake Essentials

    This session will explore the S-cam drum brake and the key functions of Long Stroke Chambers, Brake Stroke Indicators and Automatic Brake Adjusters, and why we use these technologies.
  • Study Group C – Inspection Procedures and Brake Performance

    This session will explore brake system related aspects of the North American Standard Level I Inspection Procedure, the use of Performance Based Brake Testers (PBBT) to measure braking performance and infrared thermal image screening as an inspection tool.

    This session will explore common brake system issues found during the roadside inspection. This will include but is not limited to brakes-out-of-adjustment, ABS lamps, air system leaks, air hose and tubing violations and more.
